The Village of Velocity

After a long season of riding, we like to kick back at our rustic vacation house among the gymnosperms way up in the Mike Mountaignes overlooking the Village of Velocity. As one of Italo Calvino's characters in Invisible Cities observes, the form of many things can be discerned better at a distance.

There's a funny story behind the name of the Village of Velocity. At one time it was called Valatie, after its foundress, Natasha Valatie. but that sounded too much like a pleasant activity to the hardworking townspeople, so they renamed it Velocity. Many hoped that the new name would attract industry at a much faster rate than in the past and promote upward mobility in the lowlands. Ironically, the new name mainly attracted cyclists, well known for their appreciation of affinitive nomenclature, and popular recording artists, well known for their appreciation of high sierras. The village prospered all the same, and now it hosts the annual High Velocity Motion Picture Soundtrack Festival at the Dorothy Zhenjia Pavilion, right next to the Velocity Village Velodome. Recent award winners are presented here.
